Nature in collapse: “Planeta Vivo 2024” report points to a 73% decrease in wild animal populations

Over the past 50 years, the average size of monitored wild animal populations has declined by 73%. This is the observation of the Living Planet Report 2024released this Thursday by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). To arrive at this value, researchers analyzed data from nearly 35,000 populations of 5,495 species of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals and reptiles worldwide, between 1970 and 2020. The decline now revealed is four percentage points above that reported in the WWF report from 2022, which pointed to an average drop of 69% by 2018, taking into account fewer species and populations than currently.
