Lucília Gago “didn’t have luck on her side”: “always available to report to Parliament”, new PGR draws “red lines”

Lucília Gago was unlucky. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the new Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) converged on this point. At the inauguration ceremony of the new PGR, which took place this Saturday at the Palácio de Belém, the head of state thanked Lucília Gago for the last six years, “fundamentally more of hardships, misunderstandings, sacrifices than calm, calm seas or good winds”.

The President of the Republic acknowledged that the outgoing PGR accepted “the thorny mission of succeeding” Joana Marques Vidal in “particularly difficult conditions”, namely “a very critical collective judgment regarding the timing of justice”. But he suggested to Lucília Gago that “it should be a consolation to her that many others, in civic life, at various times, suffered identical or more onerous pains or concerns”.

From the new PGR, Marcelo asked for “pedagogy, pacification, leadership and openness to essential changes”. Amadeu Guerra begins his role in a “very difficult context” and takes on a “mission that is not impossible, but which calls for demanding predicates”, he said, recommending that he act “with particular attention to corruption”.
