Why have sales of this car grown by 505.8%?

YWe have the car sales figures for May, and there are some data that we expected but some other data that has greatly surprised us.

In total, 95,168 passenger cars have been sold, which is about three thousand more than in April and represents an increase of 6.8% compared to sales in May of last year. This means that we Spaniards have already bought (as of May 31) 404,939 cars so far in 2024.

Citroën.

We had the surprise with the best-selling model, which on this occasion was the Citroën C3. But not the new one, but the model that is already in production but of which there are still a good number of units in stock. And the number of people who have chosen it has grown so much that its sales have increased by 505.8%, with a total of 2,823 units registered.

From 14,395 euros

The French brand is offering it with a PureTech diesel and gasoline engine and prices start at 14,395 euros. So many customers who didn’t see it in the configurator have found that it was offered to them at a huge discount and they couldn’t resist.

Peugeot.

Behind, the Peugeot 2008 has seen its sales increase by 104.8% in May, which have reached 2,713 units, and the order closes with a Dacia Sandero of which 2,527 units have been sold, which represents a decrease of 10.2 % compared to April.

As for brands, in May Toyota was once again the best seller, with 8,187 cars registered, ahead of Hyundai (6,433 units) and Peugeot (6,249 cars).

If we add this data to sales so far this year, we find that despite its slight decline, the Dacia Sandero continues to be the best-selling car so far in 2024, with 13,068 units (an increase of 15.6). And it is followed by the Toyota Corolla (+ 30.2%) and the Seat Ibiza, with 9,202 units (21%).

Toyota, the best-selling brand

This second position in the Corolla ranking means that Toyota will continue to be the best-selling brand in 2024, with 40,088 cars, above Seat (27,929) and Volkswagen (27,519).

Toyota.

Also very relevant is the type of engine that Spaniards have chosen this month of May, although there are no surprises in this sense: 41.8% of the cars have been gasoline, 10.3% diesel, 35.8% % non-plug-in hybrids, 5% plug-in hybrids, 2.4% could use gas (GLS or CNG) and 4.6% were 100% electric or extended range electric (which also have a gasoline engine, but only to recharge the battery used by the electric motor responsible for moving the car).

Thus, the Peugeot 2008 has been the leader among the gasoline ones, the Citroën C3 (the model that is no longer manufactured) has prevailed among the diesel ones, the Toyota Corolla has triumphed among the hybrids, the Ford Kuga has ‘winned’ among the plug-in hybrids, the Dacia Sandero has been the most successful among gas vehicles and the Tesla Model 3 has accumulated the most registrations among electric vehicles.
