Olympic gold, more disenchanted: “No more sponsorships or impact; I want another medal, but I don’t need it”

FThat, together with Fátima Gálvez, the first Spanish gold medal in Tokyo three years ago. So, in a mixed couple; now, alone, just like in her four previous participations, Alberto Fernández Muñoz (Madrid, 1983) aspires to Paris to his first individual Olympic podium after achieving in the last round, the European Championship, his pass to Paris 2024.

The balance of these three years is discouraging in terms of sports: “Being an Olympic champion has not changed anything for me, neither in terms of visibility nor in terms of sponsors.“, he confesses. Disappointment that counteracts his personal life: “It has changed me because I am a dad.”

Anyone who has followed his career knows that he handles the razor’s edge like no one else, for example, the Olympic final: “I think it was one of the best shots of my life.“, the perfect afternoon, the right day.

Now, despite his three world titles, he is not obsessed with his first Olympic medal in individual competition: “Do I want the medal? Yes. Do I need it? No. And even less so after what we saw after Tokyo. If I don’t get it, I’m going to continue just as calm,” insisting on the little impact that her sport has had beyond the boom after the gold in Ariake.
