Label B: cars with the environmental badge and restrictions for 2024 in Madrid

DFrom this January 1, 2024, the Vehicles with label B face new restrictions to circulate in Madrid. This classification, established by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) In 2016, it categorizes cars on the market according to various environmental badges (labels B, C, ECO and 0)considering its type of fuel and registration date, with the purpose of complying with Euro 4 regulations.

In 2021, The regulations changed with the entry into force of Law 7/2021 on Climate Change and Energy Transitionwhat required municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitantsincluding Madrid, to create Low Emission Zones. These areas restrict access, parking and vehicle circulation to improve air quality in specific locations.

Vehicles with Label B: What are they?

  • Passenger cars and light vans gasoline registered since 2001.
  • Passenger cars and light vans diesel registered since 2006.
  • Vehicles with more than 8 seats and transportation of goods, of any fuel, registered since 2006.
  • Additionally, this classification extends to motorcycles and mopeds, requiring the B label for those that only meet Euro 2 emissions levels.

Restrictions for B-labeled vehicles from 2024

Royal Decree 1052/2022, which regulates Low Emission Zones, allows cars with a B badge to circulate in these areas. However, From 2024, Madrid becomes a large Low Emissions Zone. Residents and non-residents with label B and C will still be able to access and park in the area. However, vehicles with label B will not be able to park in the Low Emissions Zone of Special Protection (ZBEDEP) Central Districtand they must use car parks attached to the permit management system.

How to check the license plate of a vehicle and where to get it

  • By internet: access the registration file and its badges in the Statistical Portal, in the Menu Option Environmental Distinction.
  • From the miDGT app: Check the badge of your vehicles.
  • By phone: Call 060 to speak to a specialized agent or use the automated system.
  • In person: make an appointment and consult the badge at a DGT office.

To obtain the environmental badge, you must do so in post offices; in the network of workshops of the Spanish Confederation of Workshopsthrough administrative managers or in the automotive studies institute (IDEAUTO).

The price for having the environmental badge stuck on the window of your car is 5 euros.
