Montella highlighted that Austria was “especially good” finding players between the lines and that is why he placed an extra center back to protect his team in defense. “In the first half we managed to keep the ball a little longer and we finished well. Afterwards, we got a team spirit that I really liked. “We managed to score in the first minutes of each half and against one of the teams that conceded the least and scored the most.”

He also acknowledged that the victory was personal revenge for him after losing 6-1 in a friendly against Austria in March: “They criticized us a lot in the friendlies because we chose teams that were in the Euro Cup. About the friendly against Austria It was a huge stain. I have to say I’ve been waiting to get that stain off.. I respect his coach, his strategy, but I wanted to change that. It was a revenge with myself because I had never lost by that score,” he said.

“The spirit goes beyond tactics. Everyone gave something more, with a lot of soul. There is a group and we believe. I am proud to have achieved this change in the national team,” he concluded.
