Evenepoel: “If Vingegaard pulls with me and Pogacar the race is over”
Remco Evenepoel shines in the first part of the Tour. In his debut he reaches the first break 33 seconds behind Pogacar, with a stage win in his pocket and being a very protagonist in the gravel. A magnificent premiere although the Belgian is not satisfied. After attacking and leaving with Vingegaard and Pogacar, the one from Soudal I expected more ambition from the Dane to finish the stage.
Escape with Vingegaard and Pogacar: “It’s a shame that Vingegaard didn’t race with me and Pogacar, otherwise the race would have been over. We could have put in 3 or 4 minutes. It’s his tactic, there’s nothing we can do. It’s a good day, I had fun and tried my worth.”
Cut in a section: “I knew that Tadej was going to attack and I managed to stay in contact with him almost the entire time. There was only one moment when I was in a bad position, I think my teammates were not aggressive enough to get me back to the front of the group and therefore That surprised me, but it was even resolved immediately.
General situation: “In any case, I would have signed to finish second on the rest day. Anything additional would have been an advantage. Now I am going to put everything in to defend this place.”
