Zelensky receives assurance from Xi Jinping that China will not sell weapons to Russia

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said this Thursday that his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, assured him that Beijing will not sell weapons to Russia, a recognized Chinese ally.

“I had a telephone conversation with the leader of China, who told me that he would not sell weapons to Russia. We will see. He gave me his word”, said Zelensky, on the sidelines of the G7 summit taking place in Italy.

Zelensky also said that the ten-year bilateral security agreement signed today, on the sidelines of the summit, between the United States and Ukraine “opens the way for Ukraine’s integration into NATO”.

The Ukrainian President, who was speaking at a joint press conference with his North American counterpart, Joe Biden, added that the agreement “stipulates that the United States supports Ukraine’s future integration into NATO”.

The G7 groups together the seven most industrialized countries in the world (Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) and a representation of the European Union.

Today, the first of three days of the summit in Italy, the G7 committed to support Ukraine of 50 billion dollars (46.3 billion euros), a sum financed by interest on frozen Russian assets .

According to the Ukrainian head of state, the money will be used to arm new brigades formed to assist soldiers on the frontline.

Ukraine and Russia have been at war since February 2022, after Russian troops invaded Ukrainian territory.
