“We would like to write fiction, because we can no longer write the truth”: the end of academic freedom in Hong Kong
Following the protests that marked Hong Kong in 2019, Beijing imposed a national security law on the territory that repressed dissent. According to a joint report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Hong Kong Democracy Council, Freedom restrictions are also felt in the academic world.
“Hong Kong universities were places where freedom of expression was protected, as part of traditions of liberal education during British colonialism. Now, students, academics and administrators, especially those studying contemporary socio-political issues in Hong Kong, feel like they are living under a microscope”, can be read in the document.
