Urbanistic Simplex, created to speed up construction of houses, is delaying licensing: difficulties in application explain the problem

Fewer houses are being built in Portugal at a time when the housing sector is in crisis. This scenario has provoked several demonstrations in more than 20 cities across the country.

In the first six months of the year, the number of licenses registered a drop. The explanation lies in the difficulties in applying the urban “Simplex” created to facilitate licensing. They stopped many processes that were already underway in municipal councils.

Jornal de Notícias reveals that in the municipality of Loures there were almost 900 fewer licenses. On Gaia, minus 615.

Between January and June, 1,713 fewer homes were authorized compared to the same period last year.

Rising interest rates caused some investors to postpone projects.

The lack of labor also contributed to this drop in the construction of new homes.

The high price and lack of options within the market have led to several demonstrations across the country. At a time when the State Budget is being negotiated, the population is waiting for change.
