Two-thirds of Europe’s surface water is in poor condition. And Portugal does not escape the crisis

“Pollution, habitat degradation, the impacts of climate change and the overuse of freshwater resources are putting unprecedented pressure on Europe’s lakes, rivers, coastal and groundwater,” says the European Environment Agency ( AEA).

Only 37% of surface water bodies in Europe achieved good ecological status between 2015 and 2021, and only 29% reached good chemical status, warns the report “State of Water in Europe 2024: the need for greater water resilience” (Europe’s state of water 2024: the need for improved water resilience), released this Tuesday.
