Two buses and seven vehicles set on fire this night in Greater São Paulo, two detained

Two buses and seven vehicles were set on fire this evening in various areas of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, a police source told Lusa today.

The last bus set on fire was recorded in Arrentela, in the municipality of Seixal, district of Setúbal, said the same source.

The other bus was consumed by flames in Santo António dos Cavaleiros, Loures, according to CMTV, which shows images of the incident. The flames have already been controlled by firefighters and there is a strong police apparatus at the scene.

The PSP also recorded fires in dumpsters in Amadora, Sintra, Oeiras, Odivelas, Barreiro, Lisbon and Almada, following the riots that followed the death of a man shot by the police, in Amadora, in the early hours of Monday.

Two people were arrested on Wednesday night in Pontinha, Odivelas, a PSP source had previously told Lusa.

The source did not specify, however, the reason that led to the arrest of these two people.

On Wednesday night, the PSP had already confirmed to Lusa a succession of fire outbreaks in several municipalities in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, in the same context.

In Amadora, fires spread to vehicles, confirmed the person responsible, who was unable to specify the total number of incidents.

According to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, at 2:30 am there were more than a dozen incidents relating to “debris” in the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal, namely in Queluz (municipality of Sintra), Alfragide (Amadora), Camarate (Loures), Carcavelos (Cascais), Carnide (Lisbon), Mina de Água (Amadora), Corroios (Seixal), Caparica (Almada) and Moita.

Odair Moniz, 43 years old, Cape Verdean citizen, and resident of Bairro do Zambujal, in Amadora, was shot by a PSP agent in the early hours of Monday, in Bairro da Cova da Moura, in the same municipality, and died shortly afterwards , at the São Francisco Xavier Hospital, in Lisbon.

According to the PSP, the man “ran away” in a car after seeing a police vehicle and “got into trouble” in Cova da Moura, where, when approached by the agents, “he resisted arrest and tried to attack them with the use of a bladed weapon”.

The SOS Racismo association and the Vida Justa movement contested the police version and demanded a “serious and impartial” investigation to determine “all responsibilities”, considering that “a culture of impunity” in the police is at stake.

The General Inspectorate of Internal Administration opened an urgent investigation and the PSP also announced an internal investigation, while the agent who shot the man was named a defendant.

Since Monday night, riots have been reported in Zambujal and, on Tuesday, in other neighborhoods in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, where buses, cars and trash cans were burned, and three people were arrested.

Two police officers received hospital treatment due to stone throwing and two passengers on the burned buses suffered minor stab wounds.
