Thousands protest in Santiago de Compostela against the Portuguese Altri project

This Sunday, thousands of people gathered to protest in front of the Junta de Galicia, in Santiago de Compostela, against the project that the Portuguese company Altri wants to install in Palas de Rei. Since May, this is the second demonstration that takes place in Galicia against the installation of the project, which envisages the construction of a sustainable fiber biofactory.

“Galicia is in struggle […]. No to the theft of our land”, were some of the slogans that were heard during the protest. Quoted by the EFE agency, the spokeswoman for the Ulloa Viva platform, which organized the initiative, Marta Gontá, indicated that the protest brought together 30 thousand people, asking the executive to listen to their demands.

“The Board must listen to the reasons why we are against a highly polluting project, which would force us to live worse […] throughout Galicia”, he stressed.

In the same sense, the spokesperson for the Ria de Arousa Defense Platform, Xaquín Rúbido, demanded that the project be stopped, arguing that it is polluting and could therefore cause serious harm to the population. “These are projects that leave nothing here. Only pollution and that is contrary to our production model”, he said.

The project to build a sustainable fiber biofactory, led by Atri, is valued at around 900 million euros.

In the first quarter of this year, the Altri group recorded profits of 21.6 million euros, an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year.

Lusa contacted Altri and is awaiting a response.
