The mother of all fairs
âCbraguês hat on the back of the neck, and halberd mares with matrons in silk scarves, breasts covered in gold and little Viseu clogs on the toes.†The phrase is by Aquilino Ribeiro, notable pilgrimage to the largest free fair in the Iberian Peninsula. And also the oldest, historians say. “Tourist, come to Viseu, visit the fair, a noise that makes you proud†, calls for a poster, recalled to memory reminding “new city, full of life and full of color†that for 30 days livens up the region . Aquilino Ribeiro, writes historian Alberto Correia, “visited the free fair and had friends with whom he would sit and talk†.
