Respect for the past and tradition

In addition to being a two hundred year old estateBarrocal has the particularity of all its vernacular Alentejo architecture having been rehabilitated by Eduardo Souto de Moura. This work led to the project being distinguished – in 2018 – with the Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The region’s materials and architecture were respected and valued, highlighting the competence and work of local artisans, tapestry, carpentry, pottery, among other crafts. In this way, the essence of what is best done in this area is transmitted to guests and visitors through the hands of the best ambassadors: the locals.
