Stellantis factory in Mangualde begins large-scale production of electric cars

The Stellantis industrial unit, in Mangualde, became the first factory in Portugal to produce, on a large scale, electric passenger and light commercial vehicles, with the release of the first models, this Tuesday, of its assembly lines.

Carlos Tavares, executive president of Stellantis, marked the day, which he considers “historic for the Stellantis de Mangualde production center and for Portuguese industry†.

The Portuguese factory in Mangualde will ensure the production of eight 100% electric models in the passenger and light commercial versions of the Citroën ë-Berlingo and ë-Berlingo Van, Peugeot E-Partner models and E-Rifter, Fiat e-Doblò and Opel Combo-e for the domestic and export markets.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the Minister of Economy, Pedro Reis, witnessed this moment together with Carlos Tavares.

“A turn of the page†at the Mangualde factory

“This day represents an indescribable source of pride for everyone at Stellantis and especially for everyone who works with us here in Mangualde. We are witnessing a very important turning point in this manufacturing unit, which has managed to be at the forefront in terms of innovation. A new range of eight electric vehicles ‘made in’ Portugal†will soon be on the roads, said the president of the Stellantis group.

This is, for Carlos Tavares, “our vision for the future of the automotive industry and we reveal today, here, further proof that it is possible to achieve our most ambitious plans, in a sustainable and manner. economically viable, placing the best products at the service of customers. We continue towards decarbonization, providing safe, accessible and environmentally responsible mobility to protect the next generations.”

With the support of the Government and under a global investment of 119 million Euros from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), in the space of just over a year, the factory – opened 62 years ago years in the heart of Beira Interior – and the models whose production begins now, “become a banner for sustainable electric mobility in Portugal†, highlights the same person responsible.

It should be noted that on March 31, 2023, Carlos Tavares had announced the production of electric vehicles for the beginning of 2025. However, this objective was achieved ahead of time and, at this moment, it is already Electric vehicles are being assembled in Mangualde.

In a note sent to the press, the Stellantis group highlights that, in the first half of the year, it led the Portuguese automobile market with a share of 27% “and was also the undisputed leader in the sale of light commercial vehicles with 44% of the market†.

Stellantis delivers 719 electric vehicles to the SNS

Meanwhile, Stellantis also informs that it was the big winner of a public competition carried out by the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health last year, for the purchase of electric vehicles that will equip units of the Service. the National Health Service from Minho to the Algarve.

In total, between Peugeot E-Rifter (300) and Citroën ë-Berlingo (419), Stellantis will deliver 719 electric vehicles, in addition to 600 charging stations (11Kw/h Wall box ) to the five Regional Health Administrations (ARS) and seven Local Health Units (ULS).

The Peugeot and Citroën vehicles chosen to electrify the SNS fleet are intended for continued home care units of the National Health Service, in mainland Portugal.

More than 600 of these units were transformed specifically for the entities for which they were intended, namely with the installation of a Ecopoint in the trunk, with a fixed structure made of sliding plastic containers.

Carlos Tavares said that he feels “particularly pleased that the choice of our country’s Ministry of Health to change the SNS fleet to ecological vehicles without local emissions has fallen on two of our models”.
