Sam Hou Fai: Macau’s next leader jumps from justice to politics

The next elections to find a new government leader in Macau take place on Sunday. Without universal suffrage and with only one candidate in the race, the result is easy to predict. The choice – which is concentrated in the hands of 400 members from four sectors of society – is limited to one name: Sam Hou Fai. The candidate left the presidency of the Court of Final Instance (TUI) of Macau, a position he had held since 1999, shortly before expressing his intention to jump from justice to politics.

In his program he commits himself to assuming the role of “family owner” of Macau. Among the guidelines that Sam Hou Fai plans to follow are updating the minimum wage regime, promoting “responsible gambling” and combating illegal activities, as well as industrial diversification. Without forgetting national security, it emphasizes the need to “remain vigilant against dangers even in times of peace and prosperity” and assures that it will implement the principle of “Macau governed by patriots”, reinforce “patriotic education” and “firmly combat the anti-Chinese forces that disrupt the stability of Macau”.
