Rui Rocha shares concerns about credibility in Justice, but calls for a “broader” vision

The president of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, stated this Saturday that he follows concerns about the credibility of justice, but understands that a “broader” vision of the sector is necessary .

“We follow concerns about justice, but we do not have a partial view of justice, which is the one we have seen in recent times, which is the view of those who only care about with justice, when, in some way, justice does not please them”, said Rui Rocha, who spoke to the Lusa agency on the sidelines of the celebration of the anniversary of the Territorial Center of Coimbra da IL, in Figueira da Foz.

Asked about the credibility crisis of Portuguese justice, the president of IL admitted that there are problems, such as the violation of the secrecy of justice or the detention of people beyond the time they It’s legal, but he said that the concern does not arise when “certain political quarters are questioned by the courts”.

“Justice in fact works inefficiently in Portugal and, therefore, our concerns are more global”, he highlighted, pointing to delays in processes or the lack of means of investigation O.

According to Rui Rocha, “what has happened in recent times is a reaction from a certain political quadrant because, in some way, it was targeted by investigations”. “We subscribe to that. We care about justice, no matter who says it,” he assured.

For the leader of the Liberal Initiative, the violation of judicial secrecy is “a serious issue”, but it is not “the only nor probably the main problem of justice in Portugal” .

Asked about the President of the Republic’s call for justice reform based on concrete proposals, Rui Rocha admitted that he fears that, “when we talk about justice reform, we are using this so that nothing happens at the end”.

“A reform always implies the bringing together of various wills from different quarters. This is very difficult to do and, therefore, we are always available to discuss measures, to discuss reforms, but we cannot forget that there is a Government in office and the main responsibility lies with the Government to present its measures, to promote these proposals, to discuss them and the term justice reform cannot be used to reach the end and do nothing”, he pointed out.

In an interview with Rádio Observador, released on Thursday, the Minister of Justice considered that there is a “certain discredit” of the Public Ministry and said she wants the next Attorney General of the Republic to initiate “a new era” and “put order in the house”.

After the interview was released, Rita Alarcão Júdice reiterated, in a publication on the social network X (formerly Twitter), that the next Attorney General of the Republic must have communication skills o, but also contribute to the “dignification of justice”, to eliminate the “stressful environment” and exercise functions “in line with the Constitution”.
