This Wednesday, the Prime Minister expressed the Government’s solidarity with the victims of the shipwreck that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday off the beaches of São Pedro de Moel and Vieira de Leiria, which killed three fishermen.

Three of 17 people who followed the vessel that sank remain missing, with three deaths confirmed and 11 people rescued alive, three of which are hospitalized, one of which is in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospitals of the University of Coimbra.

During a visit at the end of the day to Docapesca, in Figueira da Foz, where he participated in a meeting with several entities, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro expressed “regret, consternation and solidarity with all those who were affected” by the tragedy.

“On behalf of the Portuguese and the Government of the Republic, I want to give this word of total solidarity with the victims, their families and the entire fishing community of Figueira da Foz and all Portuguese fishermen”, highlighted the Government leader to journalists.

Without wanting to divert statements from the tragic moment, Luís Montenegro praised the spirit of mutual help and solidarity of the fishermen who helped the crew of the wrecked vessel.

He also praised the “prompt and always very constant” intervention of the Portuguese Navy “from the first hour” in the rescue and search actions, which will continue throughout the day on Thursday.

The Prime Minister also guaranteed support for the victims’ families in terms of health care and psychological support, as well as the availability to respond to more immediate situations that are flagged, particularly in families that have been left without resources.

The alert for the listing of the fishing vessel “Virgem Dolorosa” off the beaches of São Pedro de Moel and Vieira de Leiria was given at 04:33 to the local command of the Nazaré Maritime Police.

According to the president of the Câmara da Marinha Grande, Aurélio Ferreira, the “Virgem Dolorosa” is a trawler measuring 24 by six meters, with a port in Figueira da Foz. Most of the people on the vessel are from Figueira da Foz (Leirosa), there were two crew members from Indonesia, who were rescued alive.

The most seriously injured, 57 years old, is in Intensive Care at the University of Coimbra Hospital, with respiratory problems and a poor prognosis, according to the Coimbra Local Health Unit.

At the Figueira da Foz District Hospital, two fishermen are still under observation, one of them the master of the vessel, after four were medically discharged today, three in the morning and another in the afternoon.

The search for the three fishermen from the fishing vessel is taking place between these two beaches by land, air and sea and will remain overnightaccording to the spokesperson for the National Maritime Authority and the Navy.
