President of Israel defends investigation into October 7 “failure”

The president of Israel defended this Sunday, October 13, an investigation into what he described as a “failure” of the national intelligence service that allowed the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023 that killed 1,200 people.

Without directly addressing the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, which refuses to move forward with an investigative commission while the war lasts, Isaac Herzog demanded a “reliable, flexible and independent” analysis of the events.

“The failure of intelligence, the false (notion of) deterrence and our blatant arrogance have once again cost us a heavy and painful price of many lives taken”, highlighted the Israeli President, during a tribute, in Jerusalem, to the fallen soldiers in the Yom Kippur war (1973).

“We must act today, without delay, just as we did 51 years ago, and investigate deeply and exhaustively”, highlighted the Israeli head of state.

The Army is carrying out internal investigations, from which so far no important conclusions have emerged, except the recognition of its “failure” to protect the residents of the Beeri kibbutz, one of the most affected by the Hamas attacks that day.

The Government has insisted that “the time has not yet come” to investigate what happened at state level, claiming that the investigation could harm the management of the war in Gaza, although the military focus has now shifted to Lebanon.

At the end of September, Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara assured that Netanyahu continues to refuse to open this investigation, despite his constant requests, The Times of Israel reported.
