Portugal is not against racial equality, but at “different times of reaction”, assesses Brazilian minister

On a two-day visit to Portugal, Brazil’s Minister of Racial Equality argued that some measures from the Viventude Negra Viva Plan, such as the law on quotas or racial slurs, can be applied in Portugal. Anielle Franco also participated in the 12th edition of the Lisbon Forum and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Observatory of Racism and Xenophobia, at the Nova School of Law, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

During a meeting with the Portuguese Minister of Youth and Modernization, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, the Brazilian government official presented on Tuesday Juventude Negra Viva, which she described as “a very robust plan in Brazil†, approved in 2023 and involving 22 ministries.

The signing of the memorandum, which took place the following day, stems from the work begun on the minister’s previous visit to Portugal, last year, as part of the ministerial delegation that accompanied the President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, on his first trip to Portugal. to Lisbon after taking office.
