Portugal and Spain will each be able to capture 60 billion liters of water from the Guadiana and this time the bill is to be paid

Portugal and Spain signed, this Wednesday, what they call a “historic agreement” to share the water of the Tagus and Guadiana within the scope of the 35th Albufeira Convention, which establishes the management rules for the five Iberian river basins. The bases of the agreement had been laid out in a pre-agreement signed almost a month ago, in Madrid, by the ministers who head the Environment in both countries, Maria da Graça Carvalho and Teresa Ribera. Now they have obtained the formal signature of the two heads of government, Luís Montenegro and Pedro Sanchez, within the scope of the 35th Iberian Summit, held in Faro, in the Algarve.

Recalling that this Summit had as its central theme “Water as a common good”, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro highlighted that this resource shared with Spain is “an essential good, indispensable for our prosperity and quality of life”. The Iberian agreement on water sharing in the Tagus and Guadiana rivers is part of the four agreements signed by Luis Montenegro and the President of the Government of Madrid, Pedro Sanchez.
