Pope regrets persecution and discrimination of Christians around the world because of their faith

Pope Francis lamented this Sunday that many Christians are still discriminated against and persecuted in different parts of the world because of their faith.

“Today the Roman protomartyrs are remembered and we also live in a time of martyrdom, even more than in the first centuries” of Christianity, said the pontiff, quoted by the EFE agency.

“In so many parts of the world, many of our brothers and sisters suffer discrimination and persecution because of their faith,” added Francis, after the Sunday Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace.

Pope Francis also greeted the faithful who gathered in the square, including pilgrims from Poland, California (United States) or Costa Rica.

As he does every week, the pontiff called for an end to armed conflicts around the world and called for the search for peace.

“On this last day of June, we implore the sacred heart of Jesus to touch the hearts of those who want war so that they can move forward towards projects of dialogue and peace”, he stated.

Once again, Francis mentioned several countries affected by armed conflicts: “Let us not forget the martyred Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar and so many other places that suffer so much because of war.”
