Only pensions awarded this year will be updated according to the new rules, those from previous years will be left out

The Government reacted to the growing protest from retirees and decided that the rules for updating pensions will now also apply to those who retired in the immediately previous year. The measure does not have retroactive effects and does not specifically cover those who retired in 2022 and 2023, a period especially punished by inflation, and only applies to those who retired from January 1st of this year.

“All the people who are covered are people who have passed, or will pass by the end of the year, to the status of pensioner in the year 2024”, explained the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Rosário Palma Ramalho, at the conference press that followed this Wednesday’s Council of Ministers, about the diplomas that were approved. If a citizen retires today, their pension will be updated in 2025, explained the minister. Without this law, “your pension would only be updated in 2026”.

In response to journalists, the minister detailed that the legislative change now introduced will have a budget impact of 42 million euros. Remember that the 2023 pensions would already be updated in 2025, but they were not updated this year. The change targets pensions awarded in 2024 and therefore will not have to wait up to two years for an update.
