New music for the weekend: Nelly Furtado’s lucky number, the return of Bon Iver and the polyglot Manu Chao

The return of Nelly Furtado is one of the highlights of this Friday, rich in releases. The Portuguese-Canadian’s first album of 2017, “7” is, as the title indicates, the artist’s seventh full-length, which this year was in Portugal, for a concert at the North Festival.

Regarding the title of the album, which features Tove Lo and Bomba Estéreo, between orother, explains Nelly Furtado: “This work is like a collection. Fashion collections usually have no name, they are collection number 10 or 21. This is my collection number 7.”

With lyrics in Spanish, French and English, the musician addresses themes such as self-acceptance and the simplicity of everyday life. ‘São Paulo Motoboy’ is a tribute to the Brazilian city’s couriers and Willie Nelson participates in ‘Heaven’s Bad Day’.

Also today, “Flow Critical Lucidity”, the ninth solo album by Thurston Mooreex-Sonic Youth. Composed in Europe, the album features Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) and Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) and features artwork by British artist Jamie Nares.

Justin Vernon, the man behind Bon Iver, also confesses that he went through a difficult period, when he considered giving up music. The new songs, he says, serve to release “the darkness, the pressure and the anxiety” of one of the most difficult times in his life.

In Portugal, Ana Moura This week he released the video for what he considers his “most daring” song, ‘Slide’. Performed live at the Meo Kalorama festivalin Lisbon, at the end of August, the theme is a tribute to the eroticism of women and the video was directed by André Caniços, with Ana Moura.

In turn, Mimics has just released his third album. “Peito” is presented by the song ‘No Teu Lugar’ and features numerous guests: Tatanka, Matay, Catana, Luísa Sobral, Diana Castro and Elisa Rodrigues.
