Minister of Justice defends “broad reflection” in the face of “discomfort” with the use of wiretaps

The Minister of Justice sees as necessary a “broad reflection†on the use of hidden means of investigation, which includes telephone tapping. Rita Júdice shows concern about everything that may represent violations of judicial secrecy.

“Naturally, the Minister of Justice will always be concerned when there are violations of judicial secrecy. It couldn’t be any other way,’ stated in an interview with Antena 1 this Friday. “We are also always worried when there is an excess of resources. Now, what the Government intends to do is a broad reflection and desirably regulate the use of hidden means of investigation. In other words, what are the rules that these hidden means of investigation must follow,” he added.

“I think we have to do a broad reflection because it is clear that there is discomfort. We do not want people’s data to be misused. There must be safeguards for rights, freedoms and guarantees at all levels”, pointed out Rita Júdice, one day after the Government have presented a package of anti-corruption measures and the week in which wiretaps were disclosed within the scope of Operation Influencer.

Still on Thursday night, in an interview with CMTVthe minister had already mentioned the Government’s intention to “regulate hidden means of evidence†, namely “under what conditions, how, when and for how long and what type of evidence can be collected†€ , something he classified as a “delicate task†.
