Menéndez brothers could face a new sentence on the recommendation of the Los Angeles prosecutor

Los Angeles prosecutor George Gascón made a recommendation that the Menéndez brothers be reconvicted for killing their parents in 1989. The information was released, according to The Guardianby himself at a press conference.

“After a very careful analysis of all the arguments presented. I have come to the conclusion that under the law resentencing is appropriate and I will recommend it to the court tomorrow,” he said. According to Gascón, the brothers should be sentenced again so that the possibility of removing the life sentence without the possibility of parole can be assessed.

At stake is new evidence about the case, including a letter written by one of the brothers (before the murder of their parents) in which he, according to his lawyers, writes about the sexual abuse he suffered. Furthermore, a former member of the band Menudo stated that he had also been abused by José Menéndez (father of the brothers).

Next month a judge will rule on the case. Just as I had previously mentioned Gascón“there is no doubt that they committed the crime”, however it is important to determine whether “they should be held responsible, taking into account the totality of the circumstances”.

The murder took place on a summer night in 1989, when the brothers Erik and Lyle Menendezaged 18 and 21, respectively, killed their own parents who were watching television.
