Melania Trump supports the right to abortion, in disagreement with her husband and most Republicans

Melania Trump expressed her support for abortion rights Thursday, ahead of the release of her upcoming memoir, drawing a stark contrast with her husband, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, on this crucial election issue.

In a video published on her X social network account, the former first lady defended women’s “individual freedoms” to do whatever they want with their bodies, a position that is at odds with much of the Republican Party and her own husband, who has struggled to find a consistent message on abortion, while being ‘hostage’ between the anti-abortion supporters, who are his voter base, and those who support this right.

“Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I protect. Without a doubt, there is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women have from birth: individual freedom. What does ‘my body, my choice’ really mean? ‘?” he highlighted

The video appears to confirm excerpts from his memoir of the same name reported by The Guardian on Wednesday.

Melania Trump has rarely expressed her political opinions publicly and has been practically absent from the campaign.

But in her memoir, which should be publicly released next Tuesday, she argues that the decision to terminate a pregnancy should be left to a woman and her doctor, “free from any intervention or pressure from the Government”, according to with published excerpts.

“A woman’s fundamental right to individual freedom, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate a pregnancy if she so desires,” Melania wrote, according to The Guardian.

These views contrast sharply with the Republican Party’s anti-abortion platform and with Donald Trump, who has repeatedly claimed responsibility for appointing the three Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade. Wade and boasted about returning the abortion issue to the states.

Democrats blame the former president for the serious deterioration of reproductive rights, as abortion bans were implemented in large swaths of the country after the landmark case granting the constitutional right to abortion was overturned.

The national group SBA Pro-Life America criticized the former first lady’s views on abortion, including her positions on abortion later in pregnancy, but stressed that her “priority is defeating [a candidata democrata] Kamala Harris”.

Donald Trump assured on Tuesday that he would veto the federal ban on abortion, the first time explicitly, after previously refusing to answer questions on the subject.

However, abortion rights advocates are skeptical, warning that Trump cannot be trusted not to restrict reproductive rights.
