MAI orders an investigation into the GNR soldier who was involved in conflicts with PSP agents at the 1143 group demonstration

Minister Margarida Blasco ordered the opening of a disciplinary investigation into a GNR soldier who provoked disrespect during Saturday’s demonstration by the ultranationalist group 1143, in Guimarães, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) revealed today.

According to the MAI statement, an individual was identified after an incident at the demonstration called “Reconstruir Portugal” – which, according to JN, brought together around 300 people in the city of Guimarães – because he was involved in disrespect with agents of the Public Security Police (PSP).

“After carrying out the investigations, that element was identified as being a member of the National Republican Guard (GNR). The Minister of Internal Administration immediately ordered the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI) to open an investigation to determine possible disciplinary responsibilities by the soldier of the National Republican Guard (GNR)”, the statement reads.

The demonstration was organized by the far-right group led by Mário Machado, on the day of the Implementation of the Republic, with the aim of raising awareness of what it says is “uncontrolled immigration” that “harms those born in Portugal”.

This Saturday the “Guimarães for Freedom, national mobilization against neo-Nazism” concentration also took place in Guimarães, in which a few dozen people demanded measures to “stop the escalation of hate”.
