Madeira: Albuquerque says PS and JPP are irresponsible for refusing to negotiate

The President of the Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, today accused the PS and JPP of “total irresponsibility”, for refusing to dialogue to agree on a government program for the region.

“I would like to highlight Chega’s circumstances, unlike the PS and JPP who had an attitude of total irresponsibility, those who talked so much about dialogue, that absolute majorities were harmful (…) , when the electoral result transforms the political framework into a need for dialogue, they are the first to refuse dialogue by not even sitting down with the winning party to discuss a set of proposals of public interest”, said the chief of the Madeiran executive.

Miguel Albuquerque was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of his visit to the Ponta do Pargo golf course, in the municipality of Calheta, which represents an investment of 12ME, a space that, he said, “places the west zone as a hub of great attractiveness ” and will be “one of the most attractive in Europe”, because it is located next to a cliff and “will bring thousands and thousands of practitioners to Madeira”.

Asked about the meetings still taking place between the Regional Government and Chega to reach consensus on a government program, given that the party insists on Miguel Albuquerque’s removal from office, the Madeiran ruler reinforced that they are “concentrated on the resolution this problem.”

“I have to emphasize that, whether the CDS, IL, PAN or Chega had an attitude of democratic responsibility, of democratic humility, to sit down at the negotiating table and talk about a program that is of public interest”, he said.

On Monday, the Regional Government, represented by the secretaries of Education (Jorge Carvalho) and Finance (Rogério Gouveia), and by the chief of staff of the president of the island executive, Rui Abreu, has held meetings with deputies from PAN, IL, CDS-PP and Chega, to reach consensus on measures for the Government Program.

The other parties with parliamentary seats, PS and JPP, rejected the invitation to negotiate the approval of this document, which also makes a Regional Budget unfeasible, forcing the region to be managed with a duo regime. ©cimos.

This round came about after last week the president of the Regional Executive decided to withdraw the proposal for a Government Program that was being discussed two days ago in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, because it had been announced, after having failed a round of meetings with different parties.

The PS, JPP and Chega, which have a total of 24 deputies in a universe of 47 members that make up the Madeiran parliament (which means an absolute majority), maintained that they would vote against the proposal the following day.

After the meetings, the sole deputies of PAN and IL have already concluded the negotiations, after having agreed on the measures to be integrated.

The liberal Nuno Morna announced that he will abstain, while the People-Animals-Nature deputy, Mónica Freitas, indicated that she will make the program viable, depending on the vote on the proposal.

The CDS-PP, which has two deputies, signed a parliamentary influence agreement with the PSD after the elections.

Today, Miguel Albuquerque insisted that “the problem is simple”, and it is necessary to “understand the will of the population of Madeira and Porto Santo”.

For the regional leader, “what people want is to see their lives resolved, they want a Government Program, they want a Budget because they know, and well, because they have popular wisdom, that the worst that can happen is that we stay in a political situation of impasse that has consequences for the economy, citizens’ income and employment”.

Regarding the fact that he was not present in the negotiations, he said that “everything is proceeding as determined”

In the early regional elections on May 26, the PSD elected 19 deputies, leaving it five terms away from achieving an absolute majority (for which 24 are needed), the PS managed 11, the JPP nine, Chega four and the CDS-PP two, while IL and PAN elected one deputy each.
