Lisbon Forum: “encounter of promiscuity between powers” with “spice of perversity”, says Brazilian professor of Constitutional Law
Six of the 11 judges of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Brazil’s court of last instance, participate in the Lisbon Forum. The event, whose 12th edition ends this Friday, is organized by Gilmar Mendes, currently the dean of the STF – that is, its oldest member.
Gilmar Mendes, who has been a Supreme Court judge since 2002 and presided over the body between 2008 and 2010, is a partner at the Brazilian Institute of Education, Development and Research (IDP). The organization of the event is shared between the IDP, the Lisbon Public Law Research Center of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL) and the Center for Innovation, Administration and Research of the Judiciary ¡rio – Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) Justice.
On the first day of this year’s edition, Expresso interviewed the host judge, who rejected criticism of the event, informally dubbed ‘Gilmarpalooza’. “We do not envisage any conflict of interest. The debates take place in daylight and are completely open,†he said. Even so, for three days, representatives of the three Brazilian powers (legislative, executive and judiciary) meet in the Portuguese capital with lawyers and businesspeople, who come together at debate tables, but also at dinners and cocktails informal.
On the third and last day, Expresso publishes a telephone interview with Conrado Hübner Mendes, professor of Constitutional Law at University of São PauloPhD in Law and Political Science and member of the Research, Science and Freedom Observatory of Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science.
