Largest employers: who they are and how much they pay

O The scenario is one of uncertainty regarding the evolution of the economy, but in Portugal the job market has shown signs of resilience. In the first quarter of this year, national unemployment reached 6.8%, after two consecutive increases in previous quarters. But employment also increased and exceeded 5 million people, reaching the highest value in the current series by the National Institute of Statistics, started in 2011. Together, the 20 largest national employers guarantee 3.8% of total employment of the country. They are mainly major brands in food retail and temporary work, where, in most cases, the average salary does not reach €1500 gross. This is what the data provided to Expresso by the Ministry of Labor shows, based on the wages declared to Social Security in May this year.
