“Joker: Madness for Two”: what happens when a supervillain falls in love with Lady Gaga? A musical film that’s not really a musical

When the news arrived that Joaquin Phoenix was returning to Gotham City to once again play the role of Joker, a DC Comics supervillain best known as Batman’s eternal rival, fans were in an uproar. When Lady Gaga joined the cast to play Harley Quinn/Lee Quinzel, expectations got even higher… And when it was announced that “Joker” would be a musical, there was probably as much nose-turning as enthusiasm. How did the dark story of the first film, a thriller psychological that divided opinions but earned Phoenix great praise – and after Jack Nicholson’s memorable Jokers in Tim Burton’s “Batman” (1989) and Heath Ledger’s in “The Dark Knight” (2008), the task was not easy – , would it be turned into a film with musical numbers? The answer to the question arrived this Thursday in national cinemas. We have already watched “Joker: Madness for Two” and what we can say, without spoilersis that it is not a conventional musical, but brings with it passionate interpretations of songs that the world knows well.
