Israel intensifies attacks in Rafah and enters the “list of shame” of countries that violate children’s rights: 253 days of war

Israeli bombings this Wednesday caused at least 30 deaths and more than 100 injuries in the Gaza Strip, bringing the total number of fatalities to 37,232, according to the local Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas.

The total number of deaths rose to 37,232, 70% of which were women and children, and the number of injured to 85,037, with around 10,000 bodies still under the rubble, say Gaza authorities.

In the last few hours, five Gazans died and 17 were injured in Israeli attacks on two homes in the Nuseirat refugee camp (center) and Palestinian sources indicate that Tel Aviv forces used explosives to destroy buildings in the center of Rafah .

The Palestinian news agency Wafa also reported the death of a civilian in a drone attack on a concentration of civilians near the port of Gaza, west of the city. In this area, the Zeitun neighborhood continues to be bombarded with air raids.

In Rafah, at the southern tip of the Gaza Strip, the army intensified its attacks this Thursday, close to the land crossing with Egypt, which remains closed and prevents more than 11,000 Gazans with health problems from leaving to receive medical treatment.

The situation of Gaza’s children remains critical and at least 33 have died of hunger in the last eight months, according to data from the Hamas government on Wednesday.

The Israeli army said in a statement today that it had eliminated more than ten militants from the radical Islamic movement Hamas in central Gaza in the last day, “including a participant in the October 7 massacre”, and destroyed more than 45 targets , including military structures, rocket launchers and tunnels.

Other news that marked the day:

⇒ For the first time, the UN Secretary-General’s annual report on Children in Armed Conflict placed Israeli forces on his “shame list†of countries that violate children’s rights, killing and maiming minors and attacking schools and hospitals. It also identified for the first time militants from the Islamist group Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad for killing, injuring and kidnapping children. The report records an increase of more than 155% in serious violations compared to previous years in the conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, namely in Israel and the Gaza Strip and the Occupied West Bank.

⇒ The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned this Thursday of apathy and inaction in the face of the increase in the number of forcibly displaced people, which reached 120 million in May, reaching new historic levels. “UNRWA [agência para os refugiados palestinianos] estimates that by the end of last year, around 1.7 million people (75% of the population) had been displaced in the Gaza Strip by catastrophic violence, the majority of whom were Palestinian refugees,†he calculates .

⇒ Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for an attack with an explosives-laden boat in the Red Sea that the US said caused “severe flooding” and damage aboard a cargo ship. In a statement, the Houthis said they carried out a “military operation targeting the Tutor ship in the Red Sea, using a maritime drone, aerial drones and ballistic missiles” on Wednesday night. This attack “caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room”, according to the United States Army Central Command (Centcom).

⇒ The leaders of six United Nations (UN) agencies and three non-governmental organizations (NGOs) called for the immediate and unconditional release of 17 humanitarian workers detained by Huthi rebels from Yemen. Warning about the unprecedented nature – “not just in Yemen, but worldwide” – of the detentions, the signatories stressed that they directly impede their ability to reach the most vulnerable in Yemen.
