“I see no harm or conflict of interest”: dean of the Brazilian Supreme Court and organizer of ‘Gilmarpalooza’ rejects criticism

The Lisbon Forum, which runs until Friday, is organized by the Brazilian Institute of Education, Development and Research (IDP), the Lisbon Public Law Research Center of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (FDUL) and the Center for Innovation, Administration and Research in the Judiciary – Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) Justice.

Gilmar Mendes, judge of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) since 2002, who presided between 2008 and 2010, and the current dean of the last instance of the Brazilian judiciary, is a member of the IDP and organizer of the event in the Portuguese capital.

In its 12th edition, the Lisbon Forum is once again the target of criticism, especially in Brazil, due to the proximity between agents of the executive, legislative and judiciary powers and the costs inherent to travel . In an interview with Expresso at FDUL, Gilmar Mendes devalues the criticism, assuring that “no one would need to come abroad to possibly have inappropriate conversations†.
