Hezbollah and Israel exchange attacks again, new tank incursion into Gaza leaves 7 dead: war, day 267

The situation in Lebanon continues to worsen and, this Thursday, there was another round of provocations between Israeli forces and the fundamentalist group Hezbollah, which operates in the south of the country and with which Israel has been exchanging attacks since October last year.

Hezbollah announced that it had bombed a military base in northern Israel in response to Israeli attacks that killed one of its fighters. In a statement, the Lebanese Shiite political-military formation indicated that it had launched “dozens of Katyusha rocket launchers” over “the main air and anti-missile defense base” in northern Israel.

Hezbollah had to respond to two Israeli attacks on Sohmor, in eastern Lebanon, and on the city of Nabatiye, in the south of Lebanese territory, which left five people injured.

The pro-Iranian Shiite movement announced the death of one of its fighters in Sohmor. According to the Lebanese National Information Agency (ANI), a ‘drone’ (unmanned aerial device) hit a man who was riding a motorcycle in that location.

The Israeli Army referred to the “elimination” of a Hezbollah member and said fighter planes had struck “military structures” in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah also claimed today a ‘drone’ attack against Israeli military positions, while the Israeli Army claimed to have shot down two ‘drones’ coming from across the border.

Cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, broke out following the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement in the south of Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, with a death toll of around 1,200 and more than two hundreds of hostages.

In retaliation, Israel launched a large-scale offensive in the Gaza Strip that has already caused more than 37,000 deaths, mostly civilians, and a serious humanitarian crisis, destabilizing the entire region.

Hezbollah says it has carried out more than 2,100 military operations against Israel since October 8, and last week intensified its attacks on military targets in the north of the country after the death of one of its top commanders in an airstrike Israeli.

More than eight months of violence caused at least 473 deaths in Lebanon, most of them fighters from the Lebanese Shiite movement, and 92 civilians, in addition to tens of thousands of displaced people, according to the AFP news agency. According to Israel, 15 Israeli soldiers and 11 Israeli civilians were killed in the same period.

New Israeli tank incursion into Gaza city leaves 7 dead

Israeli tanks returned today to the Shujaiya neighborhood, in the city of Gaza, north of the enclave, where several shellings left seven Palestinians dead, including children, and at least a dozen injured.

The Baptist hospital in Al Ahli, also located in the north of the Gaza Strip, confirmed the arrival of seven dead and injured following Israeli attacks in Shujaiya, as the conflict approaches its ninth month.

The Israeli Army issued a withdrawal order to residents of this area, but did not provide further details about the operation, reported the Efe news agency. Videos posted on social media show the local streets reduced to rubble, with dozens of people fleeing an area.

The Shujaiya neighborhood, considered one of Hamas’ strongholds, was the place where on December 15th the Israeli Army killed three hostages after, as they said, they were identified “wrongly as a threat”.

The three Israeli hostages, who escaped from their captors, had their hands raised and waved white handkerchiefs.

The Israeli Army thus decided to return to areas of the Gaza Strip where it had previously announced the conclusion of its operations, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the elimination of Hamas as its main objective.

In the last few hours, the Israelis have also attacked other points in the north of the enclave, including Jabalia and Sabra, where Civil Protection rescue teams reported attacks on homes and the recovery of bodies.

Continuous Israeli attacks continue to deteriorate Gaza’s weakened health system, and today the Red Crescent announced the shutdown of 18 ambulances due to lack of fuel, around 36% of its ambulance fleet.
