Government increases support for Higher Education students

The Ministry of Education changed the rules for awarding scholarships to cover more public higher education students in the next academic year and thus “promote success” and reduce dropouts.

In a statement, the press office of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) reveals that a diploma was sent to Diário da República that will “adapt and reinforce the programs of scholarships and financial support to the real socioeconomic situation of students, promoting success and reducing dropouts in Higher Education”.

The order changes the rules for student workers, who, in order to apply for the scholarship, will have their income exempt “up to 14 times the minimum guaranteed monthly remuneration”, explains the guardianship.

The possibility of granting additional accommodation “up to 50% of the limits set for each geographical area for displaced students without scholarships, with per capita income between 23 and 28 times the Social Support Index (IAS)” is another of the measures provided for in the diploma.

The automatic award of a scholarship is also extended to students on Higher Professional Technical Courses (TEsP), for students who meet the required criteria.

There is also an update to the limit values for accommodation supplements compared to the previous academic year, in line with the evolution of the Social Support Index, according to the order that regulates the attribution of scholarships .
