Government advances with over €70 million from PRR for green hydrogen and other renewable gases projects

The Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) will finance over 70 million euros in new renewable gas projects, including green hydrogen, reinforcing the investment in this area, which had already been subject of two other notices from the Environmental Fund, one for the amount of 102 million euros (in 2021) and the other for 83 million euros (in 2023).

In a decree from the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, published this Tuesday in “Republic Gazette†, the Government regulates the next notice from the Environmental Fund (FA), in order to carry out “a competitive tender procedure, based on objective, transparent and non-discriminatory criteria†.

The new notice, whose application period is not yet defined in this ordinance, will distribute up to 70 million euros, with a maximum value of 15 million euros per project.

Only projects with a technology maturity level of 8 will be selected (on a scale ranging from 1 to 9, and where level 8 designates a “complete and qualified system†, after demonstration of prototypes ).

Only companies with regularized tax and contribution status, and that do not have outstanding salaries, among other criteria defined in the ordinance, will also be eligible.

The support is non-refundable grants, which can only cover a maximum of 60% of the project’s eligible expenses (the remaining 40% will have to be covered by the promoter through other means).

The companies that are selected have six months (after signing the contracts) to move forward with the projects, which must be completed by the end of June 2026.

In the most recent notice for this type of projects (launched last year, distributing 83 million euros in subsidies) companies such as Prio Bio, Capwatt, Fusion Fuel, Cimpor, Voltalia and Hyperion, among others, were selected.

In the previous notice (which approved 102 million euros in support) projects from companies such as EDP, Fusion Fuel, Hychem, Capwatt, HEN, CME, Smartenergy, Nydalen, among others, were selected.
