Gershon Baskin, peace negotiator: “Israelis and Palestinians will have to show remorse in public”

Gershon Baskin will not stop fighting to end the war in Gaza. Despite his 68 years, the disappointments with Palestinian interlocutors and other “much greater” ones with his own Government in Tel Aviv, the peace negotiator working for Israel, in an informal regime, says he has a plan that has already been accepted by Hamas. All that’s missing is Benjamin Netanyahu’s signature. The Israeli prime minister, Baskin believes, is blocking the return of the hostages so that he can continue to say that only ruthless military force in Gaza can bring them back.

Baskin is not a Netanyahu voter, anyone understands in the first five minutes of the conversation. Nor is it an activist for the Palestinian cause who will ever be heard arguing that Hamas is primarily a “resistance force”. He does not even say that his contacts in the terrorist group are “moderate” or even that they defend the existence of Israel. It is just a case of feeling obliged to speak “to all kinds of people” in order to recover the Israelis trapped in Gaza and the Palestinians trapped in Israel. It’s just that not everyone is guilty.
