Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani expelled from law practice for spreading falsehoods about Trump’s defeat

Former President of the New York City Council Rudolph Giuliani was expelled from the practice of law by decision of a New York court due to false and repeated statements about the defeat of former US President Donald Trump in the 2020 elections. The decision on Giuliani, Trump’s former legal advisor, applies to the state of New York and was handed down by an appeals court in Manhattan.

The court ruled that Giuliani would be “disbarred from the practice of law, effective immediately and until further order of this court, and his name removed from the list of lawyers and legal consultants in the State of New York”, according to the Associated Press (AP ). Giuliani’s spokesman did not respond to AP’s email and phone call seeking comment on the decision.

Giuliani had already had his New York legal license suspended for false statements after the election that gave victory to the current President, Democrat Joe Biden. The 80-year-old former mayor and federal prosecutor, who gained enormous popularity after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York, was the main spokesman for Trump’s false allegations of electoral fraud, following the defeat of the then Republican President for four years.

At a press conference in Philadelphia, he stated that the Republican candidacy would challenge what he claimed was a vast conspiracy by Democrats. Lies surrounding the election results helped encourage an angry mob of pro-Trump protesters to storm the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, in an effort to prevent the validation of Biden’s victory.
