Five works by Vieira da Silva sold for more than €415,000 at Christie’s auction in Paris

Five works by artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva were sold at auction in Paris for a total of 418 thousand euros, auctioneer Christie’s announced today.

The auction of part of the Paul and Jacqueline Duchein collection took place on Monday and reached a global value of close to 7.5 million euros, including the sale of works by Toyen, Josef Sima or Victor Brauner, among others.

Vieira da Silva’s (1908-1992) outstanding work was the oil on canvas “Curiosités”, measuring 50 by 65 centimeters and painted in 1980, which, with an estimated sale of between 80 and 120 thousand euros, ended up being sold at auction for 220.5 thousand euros, while “Les Irrésolutions résolues IX”, with the same estimate, from 1969 measuring 89 by 116 centimeters, was sold for 119.7 thousand euros.

The other works by Vieira da Silva sold at this auction were the painting “Façades”, from 1982, for 63 thousand euros, above the estimate of 50 thousand, the gouache on paper “Nature morte”, from 1986, for 11,340 euros, and the “Le Chat” tile panel, from the same year, for 4,032 euros.

In December last year, the painting “Construction” was sold by the same auction house, in Paris, for 245 thousand euros.

In July 2020, the oil painting “Tours d’arme” was presented among works of art from the 20th century at a Christie’s international auction, with an estimate of between 600,000 and 800,000 euros, but was not sold.

In 2018, another work by Vieira da Silva, “L’Incendie 1”, was auctioned in London, by the same auction house, for a record value for the artist of 2.290 million euros.

Painted in 1944, it started with a base estimate of between 1.2 million euros and 1.6 million euros.

Born in Lisbon in 1908, Vieira da Silva moved to the French capital when she was 19 years old to study during a time of great artistic activity, eventually settling in the city, where she died in 1992.
