Electric cars: Volkswagen drops almost 50%, BYD adds and continues and Tesla maintains leadership

The sale of new electric cars in the Portuguese market increased by 16.1% in June, compared to the same month in 2023, with 3,820 passenger cars registered.

However, in the first half of 2024 there was an increase of 12.5% ​​percent, compared to the same period of the previous year, in the sale of new electric passenger vehicles in Portugal, with 19,214 units registered.

The data, released this Tuesday by the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP), also reveals that the North American brand Tesla maintains its clear leadership in this segment of the automobile market in Portugal, with 5,470 cars sold in the first six months of the year. In second place come BMW (with 1,865 units sold) and Volvo (with 1,510).

One year of BYD in Portugal

The Chinese BYD, which has now completed a year of presence in the national market, now occupies 6th position in the sales table, with a total of 946 electric cars sold in the first half of this year. The German giant Volkswagen, in turn, is not performing positively in the electric car market in Portugal, with a total of 704 cars sold from January to June, which these data represent, according to ACAP, a year-on-year drop of 47.8%.

In the segment of luxury cars and electric super sports cars, there is a record of the sale of a unit of the brand new Specter model, from the mythical British brand Rolls Royce – the first to be sold in Portugal. But, according to ACAP, there is also the sale of three Maserati, two Fisker, two Lotus and one Jaguar, all powered by electricity, in the first half of this year.
