Elections in France: “republican dam” against the extreme right is filling with water

As soon as the results of the first round of legislative elections were known, several calls were heard in France for a “republican barrage†against the extreme right. A few seconds after the first results, the French President called for a “broad, clearly democratic and republican alliance†against the National Regroupment (RN, extreme right). Moments later, the left announced the withdrawal of all candidates from the coalition positioned in third place, behind the RN and a party from the democratic camp.

Since then, withdrawals on the left and center have been accumulating in the more than 300 electoral districts where three candidates qualified for the second round. According to data released on Tuesday night, more than 210 candidates decided to withdraw from the electoral race, to cut the path to the extreme right, according to an AFP count.
