Dumpsters and vehicles set on fire in several neighborhoods in Lisbon

Several vehicles and trash cans were set on fire this morning in neighborhoods in the city of Lisbon, a source from the Firefighters Regiment (RSB) told Lusa today.

The first alert for these disturbances was received at 1am and the last at 5:33am, said the official source from Lisbon’s RSB, adding that the incidents occurred in the neighborhoods of Benfica, Lumiar, Alvalade, Alcântara and Marvila.

When asked how many firefighters were deployed during the night, the same source said he did not know exactly, but explained that, for each incident, a vehicle with six firefighters is sent.

Since Monday night, there have been riots in Zambujal and, since Tuesday, in other neighborhoods in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, where buses, cars and trash cans were burned. The PSP recorded 123 incidents, detained 21 citizens and identified another 19. Seven people were injured, one of which was seriously injured.

The public disorder occurred following the death of Odair Moniz, 43 years old, in the early hours of Monday, when the man was shot by a PSP agent.

According to the PSP, the man “ran away” in a car after seeing a police vehicle and “went into trouble” in Cova da Moura, where, when approached by the agents, “he resisted arrest and tried to attack them.” with the use of a bladed weapon.”

The General Inspectorate of Internal Administration and the PSP opened investigations and the agent who shot the man was named a defendant.

Two demonstrations are planned for this Saturday in Lisbon, one promoted by the Vida Justa movement to demand justice for the death of the shot man and another called by Chega “in defense of the police”.
