Distribution workers in protest call for an end to precariousness

Distribution company workers are on strike this Thursday to demand better wages and working conditions. Some spent the night outside a Lisbon hypermarket and, in the morning, hundreds protested in the city center.

Two marches to mark the end of the vigil for distribution company workers. Hundreds of employees are asking for better wages and an end to precariousness.

“There is general discontent. What we want is, obviously, more salary, less working hours, but above all appreciation, recognition, respect and dignity”, explains one of the participants in the demonstration.

CGTP considers the salary review proposed by the employers’ association unacceptable.

“The proposal that is on the table for workers starting their career is five euros above the minimum wage and for a worker with higher progression it is 850 euros, so we are talking about a sector worth millions”, says the secretary -general of CGTP, Tiago Oliveira.

This last night some workers were on guard near a supermarket. “Nowadays, with the cost of living we have (…) maybe we would only be able to live in one of these tents”, explains one of the protesters.
