Coins: “The homelessness problem is also due to the irresponsibility in dealing with immigration that fuels extremism”

The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, warned today about the problems of immigration, stating that the country cannot “accept a policy of wide open doors that leads to disorder”.

“Today we are witnessing demonstrations of a humanitarian drama that shames us all as a country. We need immigration, but we cannot accept a policy of wide-open doors that leads to disorder, gives space to criminal networks and multiplies cases of modern slavery,” he said the mayor, host of the official ceremonies on October 5th.

In his speech on the 114th anniversary of the Establishment of the Republic, held in Praça do Município, Carlos Moedas (PSD) defended the need for “an immigration policy that values and brings dignity to those who arrive in our country”.

“If today we have a clear problem of homeless people in the country, it is also due to the irresponsibility in dealing with immigration. This irresponsibility increases distrust in our society and fuels extremism on one side and the other”, warned.

The mayor also took advantage of his speech to announce that the municipality managed to resolve on Friday the problem of immigrants who had been living for several months in tents next to the Anjos church.

“Today I can say that yesterday we resolved one of the most serious situations in our city. Yesterday we helped all the people who were around the Igreja do Anjos to find a roof over their heads”, he said.

Security was another topic addressed by Carlos Moedas, who took advantage of the Prime Minister’s presence to reiterate the need to reinforce the Lisbon Municipal Police.

“Lisbon and Portugal have their biggest asset in security and we cannot lose it. That’s why I asked the previous Government, and I’m doing it again now, for another 200 officers for the Lisbon Municipal Police. More competence for the municipal police it’s more security for cities”, he stated.

Among the personalities who were present at the October 5th ceremony, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, stood out, who, in addition to Moedas, also spoke.

This is the first October 5th in the current framework of the PSD/CDS-PP minority government headed by Luís Montenegro, following the early legislative elections of March 10th, and takes place in a context of negotiations on the State Budget for 2025.

In the traditional solemn session at Praça do Município, in Lisbon, which was closed to the public for the second consecutive year, the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, were also present, among other individuals. .

Before the speeches, the Portuguese flag was raised on the balcony of the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho, to the sound of the national anthem.
