Bus set on fire in Bairro do Zambujal removed with police escort

PSP agents escorted at 10:40 the vehicle that will remove the bus that was set on fire on Tuesday night in the Zambujal neighborhood, where Odair Moniz lived, who was shot by a PSP agent in Cova da Moura, Amadora.

Odair Moniz, 43 years old, was shot by a PSP agent in the early hours of Monday, in the neighborhood of Cova da Moura, in Amadora, and died shortly afterwards, at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, in Lisbon.

According to the national directorate of the PSP, the man “ran away” in a car after seeing a police vehicle on Avenida da República, in Amadora, and “got into trouble” in Cova da Moura, where, when approached by agents , “would have resisted arrest and tried to attack them with a sharp weapon.”

The protests have been occurring since Monday following the death of a man shot by the PSP in Cova da Moura and have spread to several areas of Lisbon, namely Carnaxide (Oeiras), Casal de Cambra (Sintra) and Damaia (Amadora).

A PSP source told Lusa that three people were arrested in the municipality of Amadora, two for arson and assaulting police officers and another for arson and possession of combustible material.

According to the same source, in Amadora, an officer was stoned and two police vehicles were damaged, as well as five other vehicles, and several rubbish bins were set on fire.

“A group unsuccessfully tried to set fire to a gas station,” said the same source.

In the Portela neighborhood, Carnaxide, Oeiras, a bus was set on fire on Tuesday night, as well as several rubbish bins and a light vehicle.

On Monday, the Ministry of Internal Administration ordered the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration to open an urgent investigation and the PSP also announced the opening of an internal investigation to investigate the circumstances of the incident. The agent who shot the man has since been charged, according to a source from the Judiciary Police.
