British Prime Minister guarantees that he remains firm in recognizing the State of Palestine

Two days after being elected with a historic result for Labor, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, reaffirmed his intention to recognize the State of Palestine, as he had guaranteed during the election campaign . During a telephone conversation between the newly elected president and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Starmer stated that his “long-standing policy on recognizing (Palestine) to ensure its international legitimacy and contribute to a peace process does not has changed and that it is an undeniable right of all Palestinians”.

In the conversation, the first between the two since Starmer took office on Friday, the new prime minister informed Abbas of his priorities for the region, including reaching a ceasefire and returning of hostages held by Palestinian militias.

In addition, Starmer also set out to facilitate “an increase and acceleration of humanitarian aid and financial support to the Palestinian Authority”, according to a statement from Downing Street.

For his part, Abbas stated his willingness to work with the British Prime Minister “to achieve peace through a two-state solution based on international legitimacy”, and called for the “importance of British recognition of the State of Palestine”, according to a statement published by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

“The Palestinian President expressed his confidence that the formation of the new British Government will contribute to strengthening mutual relations of friendship and cooperation between the two friendly peoples, and wished his government success in its efforts for the progress and prosperity of its country”, the statement added.
