Biden should not run again according to 72 percent of Americans

Seventy-two percent of registered voters in the United States say that US President Joe Biden should not run for a second term, according to a survey carried out by CBS News and YouGov, following the debate with Donald Trump.

This result represents an increase of nine percentage points compared to the same question asked in February.

Biden, 81, saw his candidacy as a Democratic candidate for the November elections weakened after the debate against former president Donald Trump (2017-2021), in which he appeared physically clumsy and, at times, hesitant, incoherent and with unfinished sentences.

Still, Joe Biden said the day after Thursday’s debate with Trump that he did not intend to give up the race for a second term.

Eighty-six percent of those questioned in the survey consider that Biden’s age is a fundamental reason for not running for office and 72% say that Biden does not have the mental and cognitive health to be President, seven points more than than at the beginning of June.

When asked more directly whether Biden should step aside to give another Democrat the opportunity to run, 64% of voters said yes.

The poll, carried out between 28 and 29 June among 1,134 registered voters and with a margin of error of around 4.2 percentage points, also shows voters’ concern regarding Trump, 78 years old.

Regarding the Republican candidate, the poll indicates that 49% of voters believe he does not have the mental and cognitive health to serve as president and 54% say he should not run.

After this week’s face-to-face, the media and North American polls pointed to Trump as the winner of the debate between the two candidates.

A CNN poll, the station responsible for the first debate between November’s presidential candidates, indicated on Thursday that registered voters who attended the meeting “think Trump outperformed Biden”.

“The majority say they have no real confidence in Biden’s ability to lead the country. At the same time, most who watched the debate say it had little or no effect on his choice for president,” said the channel.

In 2020, when both candidates were fighting for the Oval Office, the same poll noted that the public felt that Biden outperformed Trump in their two presidential debates.

However, a YouGov poll conducted yesterday indicated that Trump won the debate by a two-to-one margin. Forty-three percent of respondents thought Trump won the debate, compared to 22% who said it was Biden. The remaining 35% said they were not sure.
