Between liberations, evacuations and new military operations, a request to the UN: compensation to the victims (the War in the Middle East, day 271)

The non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch recommended this Monday to the United Nations that all countries that sell weapons to the parties to the conflict in Gaza (Israel, Hamas or Islamic Jihad, therefore ) contribute to reparations, in the form of compensation – for both sides – or investigations into “atrocious crimes”. and respective criminal proceedings, of the damage caused to the victims of the war.

“Governments that support Israel and that support armed groups must exert influence to end abuses, as well as ensuring that victims and survivors receive meaningful compensation,” said Clive Baldwin, legal advisor at HRW.

Among the financing countries, Baldwin points to the United States as the main “source of weapons”, also highlighting Iran (a country allied with several Palestinian armed groups), Germany, Italy or the United Kingdom.

Also on Monday, it became known that on the Israeli side of the conflict, dozens of Palestinian prisoners were released, including the doctor and director of the al-Chifa hospital, in Gaza, arrested last November.

Mohammed Abu Salmiya, in a press conference, reported having suffered “serious torture†during his detention in Israel, in addition to “physical and psychological humiliationâ€with him and other prisoners “eating only one loaf of bread a day for the first two months†.

Abu Salmiya was never formally charged during his seven months in prison, although the Israeli army considers Gaza’s hospitals (including al-Chifa, run by Mohammed Abu Salmiya) to be used for military and political purposes. €œnumerous terrorist activities” by Hamas.

Also this Monday, at least two Palestinians, a woman and a 15-year-old teenager, died following shots fired by the Israeli Army during an operation in Tulkarem, north of the West Bank .

The number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank, victims of Israel’s actions, has thus risen to 550 (since January), a number that is expected to increase in the near future, as the Israeli Army today launched a large-scale military operation precisely in Tulkarem (refuge of dozens of members of the so-called Tulkarem Brigade, linked to the armed groups of Fatah and Islamic Jihad).

This operation takes place one day after Israel bombed the Nur Shams refugee camp, where a leader (who was killed) of Islamic Jihad was staying.

This is already the largest wave of violence in the West Bank region since the Second Intifada.
